proposal sesued to me, and I may add, to Sir Charles Eliot and to Professor Smith of the Hongkong University, to be a very dangerous one. I discussed it both with the Council of the University and with the Executive Council and both bodies agreed with me that it
is undesirable for this Government, interested as it is in the
success of the Hongkong University, to give any countenance what-
-ever to such a scheme. I therefore decided, with the advice of
the Executive Council, to offer to recommend to you the sale of
the site in Bridges Street on the special conditions, inter alia,
contained in the two provisoes, and I append a note of a conversa-
-tion which I had with Mr. McPherson, Secretary of the Chinese
Young Men's Christian Association, on the subject from which you
will observe that he, on behalf of his principals, accepts these
provisoes.
